What edition of Windows you get with Microsoft 365 Business?

With Microsoft focusing more on Microsoft E3 and E5, I just feel like the Business edition is somehow left behind. In this article we are going to discuss about what edition of Windows you get with Microsoft 365 Business. But first, what is Microsoft 365?

Well, if I had to explain it to someone without any passion for technology, it would be something like this:

Microsoft 365 is basically Office 365 (assuming they know that Office 365 is not just Word, Excel and PowerPoint) with a device management system, improved security and Windows Upgrade.

So, with the enterprise plans, you are upgrading from Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10 (all Pro) to Windows 10 Enterprise. This part is clear!

But, after I took a better look at the Microsoft 365 Business information from both official documentation and 3rd party websites the conclusion was unclear. After all, what edition of Windows you get with Microsoft 365 Business?

First of all, is true that Microsoft 365 Business will upgrade your Windows from 7 Pro and 8 Pro to Windows 10. It’s also true (and I am going to write about this in a future article) that you can use Microsoft 365 Business (and a certain, one time qualifying license) to upgrade from 7 Home, 8 Home or 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro.

But, what about the scenario where we already have Windows 10 Pro? Is the Windows 10 Upgrade from Microsoft 365 Business bring something else?

Well, after a lot of digging (and I mean a lot) I found some really useful information.

It looks like the edition of Windows you get with Microsoft 365 Business is neither Windows 10 Pro nor Windows 10 Enterprise. Is something in between and it’s called Windows 10 Business.

As Microsoft says: Windows 10 Business is a set of cloud services and device management capabilities that complement Windows 10 Pro and enable the centralized management and security controls of Microsoft 365 Business. (source)

Basically it’s Windows 10 Pro with Controlled Folder Access, Network Protection for web-based threads, Windows Auto Pilot.

It lacks a lot of features from Windows 10 Enterprise like Windows Hello, Credential Guard, Device Guard and Microsoft Defender ATP.

What edition of Windows you get with Microsoft 365 Business? Well, I hope my article made that clear. If not, feel free to leave a comment below and make sure you check my latest articles.
